After reading Erard’s text, everything came together. When I started to read, I noticed that designing metaphors is a real job. This was a huge shock to me. I never knew that someone’s job is to combine words into sayings. The author says that metaphors are “…meant to make someone realize that they’ve only been looking at one side of a thing.” I responded to that by wondering if that was really important? I don’t understand how designing metaphors could actually change how someone thinks. While continuing to read I started to enjoy the text a little bit more. I began to form a better understanding of this job that designs metaphors. I found one example of how metaphors actually impacted peoples lives. The author tested a set of candidates on the streets to see how they would react to the metaphor, “skills are like ropes.” The test showed that this metaphor “…had taken them by the hand. Now they were walking down the street together and the metaphor was showing them things.” This interested me, mainly because I did not think metaphors made much of a difference in peoples lives at the start of reading this text. But, after reading through all of it, I now understand that metaphors are important. I may not realize or care about how important they are, but it did change how I thought about them.
