My first experience with Gary’s transcript was confusing at times, but for the most part it pretty simple to understand. Gary explained everything very well in the video and it was only about 10 minutes long. The second time I read through Gary’s transcript, It was actually harder for me to understand. I had background knowledge from watching the video beforehand so that was helpful. I also noticed interesting facts while reading like “we utter about six metaphors a minute” and “…we cannot ignore the metaphorical meaning of words either.” This is very interesting to me because I did not realize how often I use metaphors and how they really apply to my life and understanding. I never think about what I am saying enough, I just talk about whatever comes to my mind easiest. I also related the stock market to how metaphors can be misleading. Gary talked about when house prices rise, that can cause people to assume it is actually unstoppable and may take out a mortgage they can’t afford. similar to how the stock market is unpredictable, it can cause people to store their money in a place that may not actually have much interest. The one part of the text that stood out to me was the words “Julia is the sun.” That metaphor is what helped me understand how to form a metaphor and compare it to other words.
